“You who answer prayer, to you all people will come”. -Psalm 65:2
The National Day of Prayer is held yearly on the first Thursday in May.
All faiths are encourage to pray for our nation. It is organized by The National Day of Prayer Task Force, a privately funded organization. Their stated mission: “Centered on the Lord Jesus Christ, the National Day of Prayer Task Force exists to mobilize unified public and personal prayer for America.”
The National Day of Prayer Chairman changes every year. I have updated my original post from May 7, 2015. The theme that year was “Lord, Hear Our Cry” emphasizing the need for us, corporately and individually, to place our faith in God’s unfailing love and grace.
Dr. Jack Graham, Pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Texas, was the National Day of Prayer Chairman. At that time my son, Dylan Beiersdorf, attended Prestonwood Christian Academy, which is a ministry of the church. It was such a privilege and a blessing to attend this Christian school!
In preparation for the 2015 National Day of Prayer, I had received an email from the school, an excerpt is quoted below in bold typeface. I wanted to share it with you.
“At this crucial time for our nation, one of the best things we can do is pray. We need the Lord’s healing and renewing power.
Let’s gather and lift up our United States, praying in the Spirit in one accord. We also encourage you to pray with your own family our National Day of Prayer….”

“Jesus taught that we “ought always to pray and not lose heart.” Luke 18:1
Rather than losing heart when we see what is happening in our country and world, let’s do something about it. Let’s pray.
Our battle is not against flesh and blood but against the spiritual forces of evil. Ephesians 6:12
The battle is won by taking up our armor and getting on our knees and crying out to God who hears our prayers!”
Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in Your presence this day.”
The Armor of God | The “armor” referred to above is from Ephesians 6:10-18 quoted below
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.
With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”
